GRC vs FRP: which material fits your project?

GRC and FRP are both moulded, both reinforced with glass fibres, and both made to your drawings in our Bangalore unit. They differ in what they're made of, how they look, and where they're used. For six forms, either can do the job.

GRC

Glass fibre reinforced concrete, also called GFRC

A cement-based mix with glass fibres through it, cast thin in a mould. It has the character of cast stone or concrete, and carries texture, relief and fine detail well. That's why it's the material for jalis, domes, minarets, fins and sculpture.

FRP

Fibre reinforced plastic, also called GRP or fibreglass

A resin reinforced with fibres, built up in layers in a mould. It has a smooth surface that's painted or coloured, and it's the material for tanks, gutters and waterproofing, as well as architectural pieces with a smooth finish.

Made in both

These six forms are made in GRC and in FRP. The choice usually comes down to the look you want, where the piece goes, and what it's fixed to.

Which material fits?

Three questions. If both materials can do the job, we'll say so.

  1. 1 What do you need
  2. 2 Where will it go
  3. 3 What matters most

What do you need?

Building elements

Screens and ornament

Water and utility

Something else

Tanks, gutters and waterproofing are made in FRP. Jalis, domes, minarets, fins, balusters, sculpture, fountains and noise barriers are made in GRC. Columns, capitals, cornices, arches, facades and planters are made in both. Compare GRC and FRP

How we help you choose

Send your drawings, tell us where the pieces go and the finish you want. Where only one material fits, we'll say so. Where both could work, we'll explain the difference for your project and recommend one. The choice stays yours.

Questions about the two materials

Is GFRC the same as GRC?

Yes. GRC and GFRC are two abbreviations for the same material, glass fibre reinforced concrete. Both are used in India.

Is FRP the same as fibreglass or GRP?

Broadly, yes. FRP is the general name for fibre reinforced plastic; when the fibre is glass it's often called GRP or simply fibreglass.

Can I mix GRC and FRP on one project?

Yes. Many projects do, for example GRC jalis and facade panels with FRP gutters or tanks. Add both to one enquiry and we'll quote them together.

Which is cheaper?

It depends on the shape, size, quantity, finish and whether new moulds are needed, so we price each project from its drawings rather than by material.
